âI cannot believe how grown up you are,â Isaura smiled wistfully as she glanced at Eydis. âI remember when I used to look after you and braid your hair. You hated it so much that you would run crying whenever you heard me coming. Do you remember?â
Eydis smiled shyly. âI do. You would tighten the braids so much that my head would ache. I would beg my mother to keep you away from me!â
Isaura looked horrified. âOh no, did you? Thatâs terrible. I must have gotten better at it, though, as my daughters are not scared of me yet, and Iâve been braiding their hair since they were very young!â She reached out and patted Eydisâ arm. âIt is so good to see you again, dear Eydis, to see this hall again. Your father has improved it greatly.â
âSo he tells me,â Eydis sighed. âI do see it in my dreams, if you can believe that? My dreams are filled with pictures of how it must be in here. Iâm sure I imagine it as the grandest hall there ever was.â
âWhich is a good thing to do. Sometimes, all we have are dreams to hold onto, so itâs best to make them grand.â
She sounded so forlorn that Eydis felt uncomfortable. She didnât know where Ivaar was â there was too much noise in the hall for that â but she couldnât feel him nearby. Still, she didnât want to say anything out of turn that would cause problems for Isaura.
âHow is Eadmund?â Isaura asked, scouring the hall again, but there was still no sign of him. âI donât imagine he was happy about us returning.â
Eydis hung her head. âNo,â she whispered somberly, then lowered her voice. âIs Ivaar nearby?â
âNo, no, heâs talking far away. You can speak freely. I will tap your arm if he comes close.â
Eydis nodded, relieved, but she whispered anyway. âEadmund is not himself. He has not recovered since Melaena died. I thought Jael would be able to help him, and she did for a while, but in the end, it was all too late. Evaine fell pregnant, and Father sent her away.â
âEvaine Gallas? Fynâs sister?â Isaura was shocked. âOh dear. I can imagine your father wasnât happy about that. I do remember Evaine,â she murmured, frowning. âShe was such an annoying little girl, always following him about.â
âWell, she never stopped, not even when he had a wife.â
âWhat did your father do with her?â Isaura wondered, her eyes wide, her voice hushed.
âFather banished her to Rikka, to live with her aunt.â
âOh well, they will make good company for one another, wonât they? That old crone Morana was always a strange one.â Isaura watched as Ivaar walked over to speak to Jael, for the second time, she noted; he was already busy playing his games it seemed. âAnd what about Eadmundâs new wife? How is she?â
Eydisâ troubled face broke into a smile. âJael? She is perfect for Eadmund. She is everything he needs. He had gotten so much better before this happened.
